Meredith operates a strong retail business as well as an extensive wholesale distribution which extends throughout Australia and into New Zealand.
What Meredith has been able to establish over its years of history is a total lifestyle approach to fashion.
The Meredith customer is compelled by a sense of personal style and elegance. She buys well and expects her garments to give her pleasure for many seasons. Meredith does not slavishly follow trends and our customers can build a wardrobe of possibilities and options.
The wholesale and retail divisions of the business continue to grow, with 11 company stores, and representation in more than 350 boutiques throughout Australia and New Zealand, including presence in department stores in each of the major cities in New Zealand.
Major strategic changes redefined product sourcing and expanded the ranges and the mix of product.
Meredith New Zealand continues to go from strength to strength, with more than 100 boutiques selling the label.
Business ownership changes from family owned business to company owned and operated |
Between 1970 and the mid 80's, Meredith wholesale sales grew strongly, and included the exclusive introduction of many of Europe's leading designer labels including Missoni, Versace, Krizia, and Courreges.
In the late 1980's, the business focus changed, and Meredith decided to concentrate all of its business efforts to the expansion of its successful Meredith collection and to cease importing collections from Europe.
Wholesale boutiques continued to grow in numbers, and the business expanded into New Zealand and for a short time, to the USA.
In 1962 two sisters — Mary and Edith — combined their names to form the fashion label "Meredith". From these humble beginnings Meredith has grown to become one of Australia's best known and highly regarded fashion labels. From the start, the company was dedicated to delivering collections which promised three things:
• Quality • Stylish sophistication, and • Value for money
The company grew steadily handling all types of fashion items; even brass home wares from India! A major determining moment in its history came with the introduction of import quotas in the 1960's. Since Meredith had already established itself as a major importer of ladies knitwear it received one of the country's largest quotas in this category and the future direction of Meredith was set. |
